TELETherapy

Teletherapy is a session that utilizes video or phone for you to connect with your therapist. While it can be a little awkward at first, in no time at all you and your therapist have settled into your meaningful conversations. Your therapist will understand the potential barriers meeting in this was can cause, so they’ll work closely to monitor how you’re adapting to this method of connecting and will work with you to become more comfortable. Therapists often depend on physical displays of emotion (like wringing our hands or shaking your legs) to gauge how you’re feeling. While that’s more challenging with Teletherapy, they do appreciate the added benefits video provides, as opposed to using the phone for a session. However, we know that sometimes video simply isn’t an option. In those cases, we’re more than willing to use the phone to have a session with you. Your comfort and ability to connect with your therapist is most important to us.

Consider the added perks of having your therapy session virtually using Teletherapy.

There are times when coming into our office just isn’t possible, like during an unexpected pandemic or during Summer travel plans. These scenarios bring stress of their own and can benefit from the support of your therapist. Lucky for us, Teletherapy makes that possible. By using your device like a phone, tablet, or computer you can connect to your therapist with the press of a few buttons.

Teletherapy has also allowed us to bring the care of highly sought experts to our community. Elliott Counseling Group has therapists on our team across the country (California, Iowa, Chicago, and more!) to ensure our clients have access to the best professionals to guide them through their therapeutic journey.

With the social distancing requirements, you may have your family and children are around. Do your best to minimize distractions and have your own space away from everyone but be gentle with yourself. It won’t be perfect.

You may have to get creative with this part. You could use your earbuds or headphones during the session. You could ask your family and children to give you some privacy for an hour. If you have an older child, talk to your older child about needing some help to occupy your younger children. If you have a partner or spouce, explain the imporance of having some time alone. It may mean that you close yourself up in a bedroom and get comfortable. It may mean you are outside on the patio for peace and quiet. It may mean that you have your session while going on a stroll through your neighborhood (and get all the extra wins of outside time, exercise and mental health support). Think of the places you have available that will allow for the least amount of distractions and talk to your family for support to allow for you to have the time to do your scheduled sessions.

How to get the most out of your Teletherapy sessions.

Taking the time to ask yourself what you want to get out of your therapy session and sharing those goals with your therapist can help you get the most out of your sessions.

However, organic, unplanned conversations can also lead to great progress. Don’t feel too pressured to have a plan a head of time. If you are experiencing any challenges, express them to your therapist, too. Allowing yourself to be fully honest with yourself and your therapist makes a world of a difference in the outcome.

“We are here for you. We are Better . . . Together.

Be compassionate and kind to yourself. It’s okay to be scared, worried, angry, and sad and to want the support of a therapist. Give yourself permission to ask for help. Our team is eager to provide support to you during periods when you need it. Don’t think of it as a service, consider it a partnership in your wellness journey.
