Way back in 1995 I made a lucky stumble into a therapist who was practicing a therapy technique called EMDR. I made fast progress in healing from a date rape that had haunted me since my teens. Fast forward to 2016 and a stranger expose himself while I was alone in my office. It happened so fast, but I found myself jumpy and teary the next day. I called Dirk Mol, a therapist certified in EMDR to help me process it. In just two sessions my anxiety disappeared.
Last year as Dirk was approaching retirement he was encouraging me to assist our other therapists to get certified in EMDR. His business was overflowing with clients who needed this; we only had one other therapists doing it and her schedule was busy too. The thing that holds most therapists back from being trained on EMDR, is the cost and time. Jolie Carsten, our clinical director and I put our heads together and invested in bringing an expert from St. Louis to do on-site training with 15 therapists. You’ll find more about EMDR in the article below, I just wanted to give you the background on why we decided to have this therapy become a focus of our practice.

If you, or someone you know has chronic anxiety, PTSD, phobia or have witness one-time traumatic events such as car accidents, burglaries, assaults or have experienced trauma from adverse life experiences as a child or adult you may benefit from EMDR Therapy. Those who utilize EMDR still have memories of the traumatic events, but are less distressed by them.
EMDR Therapy takes place in a normal office setting. It uses eye movement to mimic REM sleep while processing memories. The development of the therapy is interesting, as it began with using the eyes in bilateral movement and has evolved to sounds heard with the ears; pulses felt in the hands – or other bilateral movements that stimulate both sides of the brain.

I was suffering from PTSD after experiencing much loss and never even realized that's what stood in the way of a healthy life. It's a wonderful treatment and more people should be informed about it.
