What is DBT?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a psychotherapy model that was created by psychologist Marsha Linehan in the 1970’s. The treatment was created to treat borderline personality disorder, but over the years, research has shown that DBT is very effective in treating a range of other problems as well, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse.  DBT teaches us to manage overwhelming emotions more effectively, and helps us learn to handle distress in healthier ways, without losing control.  DBT also helps us learn to fully accept our current moment, or life situation, and then work to change aspects of our life that are within our control.

What will DBT teach me?

Mindfulness Skills: These skills help you stay in the moment without worry about the future, as well learning to see the moment, ourselves, and others without judgment. 

Distress Tolerance Skills: These skills are everyday coping skills that help you manage stressful situations in effective, healthy ways.

Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills: These skills help you manage relationships more effectively by learning to deal with conflict, set healthy boundaries, and get your needs and wants met.

Emotion Regulation Skills: These skills teach you to identify, and express and manage emotions in a healthier way.  You learn that all emotions do not have to be acted upon, and learn skills to decrease unhealthy behavior that results from painful emotions.

Is DBT Skills Group right for me?

DBT skills group will enhance your ability to deal with overwhelming emotions, help you learn ways to improve upon relationships, learn effective coping skills, and practical skills for using mindfulness in everyday life.  DBT group is most effective when you are in individual therapy as well as the group, so you can focus group time on learning and practicing the skills.  DBT Skills group is a commitment.  You will be asked to commit to at least eight of the nine weeks of group, complete weekly homework assignments, and participate in group discussions.
